Gluten Free, Soy Free Soy Sauce!

happy new year to all! i hope this year brings good, flavorful, and healthy eating to all!

i had to share a new product i just tried out- something i've been looking for for quite a while. for the gluten AND soy intolerant, there is little in the way of a soy sauce alternative. i have been trying to order the Miso Tamari from South River Tamari for some time, but they've been out of stock... so since i couldn't get that one, i recently bought Coconut Secret's Coconut Aminos. it's a new product that Whole Foods recently started carrying. note- not all stores carry them yet, and you might have to request it.

the company carries other products as well, such as coconut vinegar and coconut nectar (looks similar to agave nectar) but i haven't tried any of them yet.

so how does it taste? i have to say- it really is similar to soy sauce, but a bit sweeter, and less salty. i think these are actually good things- soy sauce is way too high in sodium, so the coconut aminos goes down a little easier.

now the con- the price. i paid a whipping $6.99 at whole foods in d.c. i'm hoping it comes down, because at this point this is going to have to be a special treat for me and not used in every dish or stir fry i make- more of an accent than main seasoning.

**update: 2/19/10- i bought another bottle recently at Roots Market in Clarksville, MD for a little over $5- much better!

so for my first tasting i had to make sushi... i miss having sushi with soy sauce so much and it was a great treat. being that i'm pregnant i did have to make a cooked sushi, so i did a simple carrot, cucumber, avocado, and shrimp roll. delicious! let me know if you try it and what you think!

  2. I will have to look for this, I am
also soy free. I've been making my
own soy sauce substitute, but this would be convenient when I don't have any made up. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I wonder if you would share your recipe? These alternates do not appear to be readily available at my local health stores.

  5. I knew someone was going to blog about this product soon. Bought it at my local WF two weeks ago (it was a whopping $13 for my little bottle, so either you got an even smaller bottle or your WF has better deals than ours)!

  6. Anon- glad you will be able to use it!

Jane- my bottle is 8 oz but definitely not $13! ;) is yours bigger?

  7. Oops, I recently found out that it is $6.99, just misprinted on the shelf tag. Thank god, as I rarely check my receipts. Have you seen the coconut vinegar by the same brand?

  8. Jane- $6.99 is still a bit pricey, but I think it's worth it ;) I did buy the coconut vinegar, I just haven't tried it yet.

  9. Great site! We are discovering these allergens in our family now. I found your blog by googling "soy free soy sauce." Thanks.
P.S. Miso is a mix of soybeans, barley and or rice, but always contains soy. If you find a soy free one I would love to hear about it! Great work.

    1. A little late as a reply, but I just bought a jar of soy-free miso made with azuki beans by a brand called South River Miso Company. It's awesome!

  10. CrazyK- glad you found me! while you're right miso is normally soy, the one i'm talking about is not. it's from south river miso (http://www.southrivermiso.com/)
i've posted info about it here:

  11. I am so glad I found this post! I also found you by googling "soy free soy sauce". I recently found out that my nephew is soy/gluten/dairy free, so I wanted to cook for him (and help my sister with everyday recipes!). Question, have you tried making teriyaki sauce from this coconut sauce? He loves teriyaki chicken, and I would love to make it for him! He is 9, so the change from "normal" cooking has been difficult.

  12. Do you know if it is also yeast free? I am allergic to wheat, soy & yeast so this addition, to my very small menu, would be awesome.

  13. yes it is! only ingredients are coconut sap and sea salt, so enjoy!

    Can't wait to get some.
    Thank you so much!

  17. How did all of you find out you have the soy, wheat, gluten, yeast intolerances? I just found out through food sensitivity testing. I'm skeptical because I don't have any obvious symptoms. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying the South River Chickpea and cannot wait to get the Coconut "soy!" Hooray! Love the blog!

    1. As a child I was diagnosded with allergies to milke eggs wheat and fish. As well as a host of environmental allergies. The milk and fish were the most severe hives and swelling of the airway. with eggs an wheat being milder itching, hives and topical swelling. As I grew older I outgrew my allergies..or so I thought. My oldest child had very mild seasonal allergies, whne we moved we left what ever he was allergic to and they went away. but my youngest children also have a host of allergies milk, eggs, wheat, and peanuts for one; milk, wheat, and soy for the other. I eliminated wheat and learned gluten free baking and suddenly my mild but persistent eczema cleared up. As well as mild intestinal upset suddenly cleared up. Apparently I am still allergis or intolerant of wheat. I no longer test positive for a wheat allergy but I have much improved with out it.

    2. Anon- in the beginning i just had "stomach problems" - would often have upset stomach and get colds often, fatigued, etc... then once I cut out the gluten those problems went away. I also got horribly ill once i re-introduced it. The soy I realized was bothering me when I started to notice some symptoms coming back. I would recommend cutting everything out (watch out for hidden sources) and then a month or so later reintroduce one at a time and watch for reactions.

  19. I just bought this for the first time after trying the Miso Tamari from South River Tamari. I liked South River's product, but it wasn't my absolute favorite. Plus, having to get it shipped and the minimum payment of 25 bucks was a bit of a pain (I supposed beggars can't be choosers, though!). I am going to try it tonight with some sushi! I have celiac along with soy allergy and it is awful! At least these products exist for us. Sadly, it was $7.39 at the Whole Foods near me, so it has gone up in price. :(

  20. I would like to go to Korean Barbecue Restaurant in the Philadelphia area or in New Jersey. I would like to try Korean Barbecue made without soy or with a substitute. Any suggestions, or even the possibility of going and grilling plain meat, but I am a little embarrassed to even ask because of my allergies (soy, all nuts, and legumes).

  21. There is an online market called Thrive Market, they sell another coconut amino that they produce, that I found to be a step above the other one.
It is organic, the bottle is bigger, and I think it may cost less?
It only contains organic coconut blossom nectar and balanaise sea salt.
